Cardinal Health (OH)Engage Your Employees
A Healthy Appreciation for the Arts
Cardinal Health, a global, integrated healthcare services and products company, values their employees’ connection to the arts and highlights their creative talents through various initiatives. The 2017 BCA 10 Best Businesses Partnering with the Arts winner recognizes that through imagination and creativity, an individual can enrich the human soul and advance society.
George Barrett, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, grew up singing and playing instruments and wanted to incorporate his love for the arts into the business.
“At Cardinal Health, we strive to foster an environment where all employees feel they can express their truest and most creative self,” said Barrett. “Together, we can, and invariably do, lift our communities through this support.”
The company has both a chamber orchestra and a jazz band comprised of Cardinal Health employees. The ensembles perform in-house at the corporate headquarters in Dublin and in venues throughout central Ohio.
The orchestra holds an annual holiday concert and even has special guests join the performance celebration like ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Opera Columbus, Columbus Symphony, Jazz Arts Group, The Harmony Project and BalletMet Columbus.
As recently as May 2017, the orchestra performed a free, one-hour concert at the Columbus Museum of Art.
Many employees perform with the Harmony Project, a nonprofit organization in Central Ohio whose mission is to connect people across social divides through the arts and volunteer service. The Harmony Project performs in underserved neighborhoods, public schools, housing facilities, prisons, and communities around the globe.
In addition to the arts programming within their walls, Cardinal Health demonstrates strong support for and involvement with arts programs outside of the company.
Cardinal Health is a key partner in the largest-ever initiative for marketing the arts in Columbus. The Art Makes Columbus / Columbus Makes Art campaign is a progressive, influential, and collaborative community effort that promotes the diverse perspectives, depth of talent, and potential that make up the Columbus arts community.
Cardinal Health provided support for the Weinland Park Story Book, a public art project created by the Wexner Center for the Arts and community residents, designed to tell the story of a transitional neighborhood in Columbus that has changed dramatically over the past century. The Weinland Park Story Book is an illustrated anthology of the neighborhood’s evolution, as told through more than 100 residents’ stories, written and interpreted by more than 40 artists. The result has fostered community pride and helped encourage revitalization of the neighborhood.
This Fortune 500 corporation understands it has a tremendous opportunity to strengthen the life and vibrancy of the community. By using the arts as a tool, it can also significantly contribute to employees’ happiness and quality of life.
