It’s a Celebration! The 2017 BCA 10 Gala: Best Businesses That Partner with the Arts

On October 11th, business and arts leaders gathered at the iconic Central Park Boathouse in New York City to honor the best businesses partnering with the arts in America at the annual BCA 10 Awards. Now in its 13th year, this black-tie gala presented by Americans for the Arts’ Business Committee for the Arts brought an evening of stories and musical performances that showcased the great gain in the business and arts communities coming together. 

 

The companies recognized this year join an illustrious list of honorees who are transforming their businesses and their communities by partnering with the arts to foster innovation, engage employees, and contribute to the health and quality of local life. This year’s BCA 10 honorees are:

 

21c Museum Hotels

Cardinal Health

Guitar Center Inc.

Halekulani Corporation

Houston Methodist

Humana Inc.

Kaiser Permanente Colorado

Lincoln Financial Group

Magic Hat Brewing Company

The Betsy-South Beach

 

 

UNIQLO and The Museum of Modern Art received the BCA pARTnership Award and Raymond J. McGuire, Global Head of Corporate & Investment Banking, Citi, received the BCA Leadership Award.

 

 

  

The night kicked off with a cocktail hour for attendees overlooking the Central Park Lake, and was followed by award presentations, dinner, and musical performances. Each BCA honoree was presented with an original inscribed piece of glass from the artists at Rosetree Glass. Broadway, film, and tv star Santino Fontana, performed jazzy tunes and a few from his performance career.  Cellist Derek Loue, student at the Juilliard School of Music, gave an enchanting solo performance.

 

 

Honorees 21c Museum Hotels, Halekulani Corporation, and The Betsy-South Beach come from the hotel industry. 21c Museum Hotels puts contemporary art at the heart of its experience. The company was founded by contemporary art collectors and preservationists who believe in the power of art to transform communities. Halekulani has created and developed a bespoke program of experiences for its guests and patrons, including its “For You, Everything” program, which invites guests to enjoy the cultural and arts offering on Oahu through VIP complimentary access and select private docent tours at some of the most famous and iconic arts and cultural institutions in the city. The Betsy Hotel—family-owned and independently operated—aims to capture and champion the power of community through its dedicated PACE (Philanthropy, Arts, Culture, and Education) program.

 

Cardinal Health, Houston Methodist, Humana Inc. and Kaiser Permanente Colorado come from the healthcare industry. Cardinal Health’s culture of giving back to the arts begins with chairman, CEO, and classically trained opera singer, George Barrett, who frequently says that the arts influence his leadership style. Houston Methodist’s programs of its Center for Performing Arts Medicine have expanded to include integration of the performing and visual arts into the hospital environment, where the power of the arts accelerate patient healing and provide holistic care. Humana prioritizes arts and health research by enlisting the support of creative economy producers and supports the arts through donations and volunteerism. Kaiser Permanente Colorado has supported the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, facilitating programming within the organization that cultivates employee creativity and connectedness

 

Guitar Center, widely known for its instrument and monetary support to more than 400 schools, music programs, charities, and nonprofit organizations each year. Magic Hat Brewing Company accepted their award with a spirited toast in the tradition of the company. Lincoln Financial Group has been a long-standing partner to the arts in the communities in which it has a major business presence, supporting many cornerstone organizations through the years.

 

UNIQLO and MoMA’s shared passion for quality, innovation, and spreading the joy of art around the world lends to their dynamic partnership and Raymond McGuire brings his style of humor, wit, intensity, and thoughtfulness to his work and that which touches the arts.

We’re looking for the best businesses in America partnering with the arts. Presented annually by Americans for the Arts' Business Committee for the Arts, the BCA 10 Awards recognize the 10 best businesses partnering with the arts in America.

Aetna, Inc. was named this year’s BCA Hall of Fame recipient and Robert Buchsbaum, CEO of Blick Art Materials, was named 2016 BCA Leadership Award recipient.

 

The night kicked off with a cocktail hour for attendees overlooking the Central Park Lake, and was followed by award presentations, dinner, and musical performances. Each BCA honoree was presented with an original inscribed piece of glass from the artists at Rosetree Glass. Broadway star and 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Actress, Alice Ripley, performed stirring songs from her career. Pianist Julius Rodriguez, jazz piano student at the Juilliard School of Music, gave an enchanting solo performance.

Austin Energy, Badger Meter, and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery appreciate that the arts can help engage both employees and communities. Austin Energy collaborated with Forklift Danceworks to develop an evening-length performance for the city that featured the utility company’s linemen, technicians, and employees. Badger Meter also incorporated employees in an innovative community outreach program that became a concert written and performed by the employees. And Dogfish Head Craft Brewery’s community engagement department appropriately named “Beer and Benevolence” has longtime dedicated support to the local arts and culture scene. Read more about the arts engaging employees.

 

Dealer.com, Dunlap Codding, and M Powered Strategies, Inc. boost and emphasize vibrant communities and accessibility. Dealer.com commissioned eight large-scale art pieces around Burlington which are the largest public art canvasses in the state of Vermont. Dunlap Codding has a large indoor/outdoor gathering place that encourages artistic expression and has hosted and facilitated more than 150 arts programs free of charge. And, M Powered Strategies, Inc. proudly supports hearing-impaired device maintenance and American Sign Language interpreted performances to their partner Shakespeare Theatre Company. Learn more about how the arts can contribute to a vibrant quality of life and cultural scene.

The Many Ways to Connect Arts & Business

Last week, I left snowy New York City to spend some time in sunny Ft. Lauderdale at the invitation of the Broward Cultural Division to talk with arts organizations about the many ways they can partner with local businesses.

 

We discussed how to build a successful and meaningful partnership by thinking of the needs of business first, and how to look beyond the usual suspects when thinking about potential business partners.

 

We were joined by local business leaders from Florida Power and Light and Merrimac Ventures who spoke about how partnering with the arts helped their business engage new customers, reach new audiences, and enhance the quality of life for their communities. For more tips on creating partnerships check out our Building pARTnerships on Your Own toolkit.

 

This type of training session is just one way you can use the resources of The pARTnership Movement in your community. Here are some other ideas:

 

  • Tell your story: Promote great arts and business partnerships on twitter (#artsandbiz), Facebook, and YouTube. Don’t forget to let us know, too!
  • Give a presentation at your local chamber of commerce about how the arts can help local businesses. See how it worked in Montgomery County, MD! 
  • Bring the 8 reasons to partner with the arts with you when you talk with business people and organizations. Use examples of partnerships in your community to make your point.
  • Check out our toolkits and webinars so you have all the information you need to partner with the arts in your community. Need more advice? Let us know.
  • Bring arts and business leaders together for a conversation about how they can work together and advance community goals like in Richmond.
  • Ask a local business leader to co-sign an op-ed about the value of the arts. Check out these examples from Des Moines and Houston.
