Each year, Americans for the Arts honors the best businesses partnering with the arts in America through the BCA 10 awards. This summer, two of our previous honorees, Golden Artist Colors, Inc. (BCA 10 2012) and Scholastic Inc. (BCA 10 2013) have partnered to provide an unprecedented opportunity for art educators. Teachers of students who received recognition in the 2015 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were invited to submit painted art-pieces for a chance to participate in a weeklong artist residency through the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation.
The recipients, Cristina Gonzalez, Jeffrey Deane Hall, and Claire Lerner, were chosen by Scholastic Art & Writing staff and the National Art Educators Association. The residency took place July 28 to August 5, 2015 in New Berlin, New York, within the site of the Golden Artist Colors manufacturing facility, a 19th-century barn that has been transformed into a 21st-century artist residency, with large studio spaces and private apartments.
Residents were provided with the opportunity to work with dozens of unique materials and technologies to explore innovative uses of painting technology. Golden Artist Colors experts were available throughout the residency for technical assistance and to provide daily workshops. The residents also received $1,000 stipend to use for travel, specialized materials, and discretionary spending; free meals; one-year membership with the National Art Education Association; a supply of Golden’s high-quality paint; and more.
“Creative, innovative thinking, the hallmark of artists and writers, is fundamental to building economic strength, and new and better ways of seeing the world. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards validates the creativity of students in their teens to encourage them on a path to contribute great ideas that will benefit society,” said Dick Robinson, President and CEO, Scholastic Inc.
By partnering with Golden Artist Colors, Inc., Scholastic is able to provide for the educators who help students reach their creative potential. For two years in a row, Golden Artist Colors, Inc. has donated paints to more than 1,000 arts educators annually who have students who are Scholastic Art & Writing Award recipients. Now, their new residency collaboration helps Scholastic and Golden fuel creativity and give educators the time and space to refocus their energy on their artwork, uninterrupted.
