2012 BCA 10 Winning Tampa Bay Times Spreads Joy of Literature with Times Festival of Reading

Every fall, the Tampa Bay Times marketing department produces a celebration of the literary arts known as the Times Festival of Reading. This one day event draws thousands of book lovers, as well as famous authors from across the country who come to discuss their work, meet fans and sell books.

“Like an orchestra or museum or concert hall, a fine newspaper is a creative enterprise and a community asset. Through fat times and lean, we have tried to nourish the creative arts because they help make our community more vibrant. Our investments have paid dividends for the Tampa Bay region, and therefore for our enterprise,” says Paul Tash, Chairman and CEO of the Tampa Bay Times.

The Tampa Bay Times believes the arts help fuel the economy and creativity, and that fostering and supporting the arts is crucial to the health of the community. By increasing awareness, creating discussion, providing economic support and driving audience, the Tampa Bay Times continues to help the area’s vibrant arts community.

Since 2005, the Times has given more than $865,000 in cash and approximately $1 million of in-kind support through print and web advertising to dozens of arts organization throughout Tampa Bay. In 2011, the Times gave more than $62,000 to the arts in Tampa Bay and provided more than $100,000 in discounts on advertising and in-kind space.

Acting as an arts leader in the community, the Times makes its senior leaders available to serve on the boards of nonprofit arts groups. Times staffers have served on the boards of Ruth Eckerd Hall, the Dali Museum, and the Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA).

Through its support of the TBBCA, the Times has helped fund scholarships for local high school students to pursue a secondary education in the arts. Over the past four years, more than $60,000 in scholarships has been awarded.

For more than 20 years, the Tampa Bay Times has supported dozens of diverse arts and cultural organizations throughout Florida. Currently, the Times has been the media sponsor of some of the largest, most renowned venues and arts festivals in Florida, including the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa Bay Blues Festival, and the Gasparilla Arts Festival. The Times also proudly supports many smaller, local arts groups and events such as Studio@620, Tampa Theatre, and the Morean Arts Center.

Zipcar-Philadelphia Transports Mobile Murals

Everyone wants a car that turns heads when it drives by, so why not drive an actual work of art? For the third year in a row, Zipcar has partnered with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program to celebrate the arts, raise money, and promote the services it offers by wrapping a car in a beautiful mural for Zipcar members to drive.

Each year during its Mural Arts Month, the car share and car service company selects an artist to cover one of their cars in an intricate mural. This year, outdoor abstract artist MOMO worked with the Arts Education Department at Mural Arts to create the work “Practical Geometry” on a VW Golf. For every hour the car is reserved, Zipcar will donate one dollar to the Mural Arts Program.

Zipcar-Philadelphia Marketing Manager Kristina Matthews captures the company’s commitment to the arts: “Whenever we discuss Zipcar-Philadelphia with our counterparts, the art that lives and breathes in the city is one of the first topics that is raised. Everybody knows Philadelphia for the beautiful murals that surround the city, and we are thrilled to say that we partner with Mural Arts.”

This partnership demonstrates Zipcar’s commitment to enriching the communities in which it operates and supporting the vibrant culture of public art. With beautiful murals now zipping through the city, it is truly a mobile masterpiece.

An Animated Approach to Arts and Business Partnerships

If you’ve ever wondered what can be accomplished in 11 weeks by a class of college seniors equipped with animation software, the answer is – a lot, actually.

The Arts & Business Council of Miami recently worked with a class at Miami International University of Art & Design in celebration of its 30th anniversary, challenging students to depict the creative ecosystem in Miami in a digital media project. The partnership not only demonstrated that the arts lead to innovation, but also provided students with a real-world client experience – perfect for a senior portfolio!

Students developed story boards, pitched their ideas and gave final presentations, all the while exploring the ways that arts have been essential to the business sector in Miami. And like the good millennials they are, tracked their progress online using the hashtag #MIUABC.

The results were incredible. Though the aesthetic themes and content varied, the message was the same: if businesses are looking for transformative strategies, look no further than the arts! One student, Bernadette Lim, echoed the pARTnership Movement’s message with her project, 8 Reasons to Join the Arts. Each final project involved animated logos that will be featured on the Arts & Business Council of Miami’s website, and were shown at the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affair’s Breakfast with the Arts & Hospitality Industry. The Arts & Business Council of Miami even got a video out of it! You can see how these animations will be used in the cultural tourism outreach efforts and learn more about arts biz partnerships in Miami here.
